It's never easy finding that right balance of power and class.

Okay so let's face it, if everyone could have a Ferrari F450 Modena or a Porsche GT2 we would. But not all of us are New York Cities finest stock broker. So we have to settle for automobiles that, in some people's eyes are just as good as a Mercedes SLS AMG, except for a lower price. I'm going review 5 cars that could make your average 45 minute drive to work be the most breath taking experience of your life and at the same time not feel like your in the Indy 500. All of these cars are still produced today and are much more affordable than your average Porsche brand new off the lot. I'll be adding one car per day with a simple write up of my opinion on the car. Feel free to leave comments or suggestions.

Off too our first vehicle. Now I know what probably 90% of you are thinking already, THIS CAR ISN'T OUT YET. Correct. But it still makes my list. Why? From every write up so far and every review, picture, spec on the 2012 Golf R I have seen, I've liked. 270 BHP and a 30,000$ price tag(although I would get one used with 10k miles on it for about 5k less) it's hard to beat. Only coming with a 6-speed manual gear box and an interior to die for, I would want this in my driveway for sure. Not too mention the Golf R looks a whole lot nicer than the GTI which has terribly ugly alloys. Otherwise the car is somewhat of a spit image of it's older brother. This is the first reasonably balanced car on my list.

Onto our second automobile. After serious thought throughout the night I wanted my second car too be a little more toned too the track side of things. Not everyone is into Road and Track or anything of that sort and mostly may just buy a car like this for daily driving with an edge. The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is not first of it's breed as there has been a very long history of this car making and breaking records. Quite personally I know the last three generations (yes THREE, almost ten years) this car has dominated the mid range sports car market. Normally equipped with Recaro seats, the car has a feel close to that of a track car you would use on your daily visits to Lime Rock Park. But Mitsubishi was smart and that's were they stopped the track feeling and switched over to a beautiful interior inlays and sporty looks. Only being a 4 cylinder engine that's turbocharged and inter-cooled, the car does produce 285BHP. Newer models, like the 2012 are supposed to be coming equipped with H&R springs for that stiffer ride. Although these cars do run almost 37,000$, you would be surprised that you can find them for almost 13,000 - 15,000$ less and pick up their older brothers like the EVO 9 and 8 for even cheaper if your lucky.

This is one of my....harder picks.

Okay i'm going to be honest on this one terribly, this is not one of my liked picks. I've always had issues with Subaru Impreza's just because I love the Evo much much more. I've always seen way too many of these car's locally whether it be a WRX or and STI and quite frankly the Evo is just and all around better car. BUT I do have to include this car into our conversation going on here. Why you ask? Because it is an all around good sports car that's mid range and in some cases cheaper than the Evo. Putting out a 305 BHP is even more than the Evo. The best thing about this car is it uses the infamous helical 4. Yes a EXTREMELY similar engine too the Porsche Boxster which is probably my favorite car currently. The Boxer H4 engine is by far the most brilliant thing man kind has made. Not too mention they sound absolutely stunning....and scary. The interior of STI is improving year by year, now coming equipped with a boost gauge and very sport bucket racing seats, the car can almost be considered a look alike Evo on the inside.Uncanny! This is car number 3 of reasonably balanced mid-range sports car.

Honda has a likable sports car?!

Yes well Honda is one of the most popular auto manufactures to date. They produce millions of cars a year and have more vehicles last past 200,000 miles than any other company. They also have pretty stylish looks. The next car i'll be reviewing is in its own class. Why? because it's a non-turbocharged inline 4 engine that produces 238BHP. That's a whole TON of power for a car that weighs almost nothing. With the added convertible feature and a very aggressive front end styling, this car is sure too get looks anywhere you go. The s2000 is a rear wheel drive car and handling is surprisingly very good since the car is one of the lowest too the ground in the class. I will say the inside of the s2000 could be a bit nicer. I've seen Mazda Miata's with nice interiors that aren't so bland but all in all what do you expect from a mid -range sports car roadster that you can easily find for under 20,000$?

2003 Boxster S

Well as its been fun, i'm going to wrap up with a car that well technically isn't as affordable as the other or could be considered mid range in some eyes. The Porsche Boxster S is a formidable car on the track and a great daily driver for around town. These cars can be found for under 25,000$ Used, they'll just be a bit older but just as good as the new ones from my opinion. Still coming with a 3.2L H6 boxer engine, the car puts our amazing power with a rear mounted engine that gives the vehicle a beautiful 50/50 weight balance ratio.Yes rear mounted engine, which means your trunk is actually in the front of the car.....brilliant! With an interior just as gorgeous as any other high end German company I think this car deserves a lot of props for what it is and the achievements its made. The Porsche Boxster always dominates the track even with a little tuning, whether it be Bilstein suspension or a chip and exhaust this car is sure too have anyone at the edge of their seat, bursting with joy whether in the driver side or passenger side of this vehicle!

New Porsche Boxster S

If you were buying a sports car, used, under 30,000$. What would it be?

  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
  • Subaru WRX Sti
  • Porsche Boxster S
  • Volkswagen Golf R
  • I've seen better choices.

You seem very passionate and knowledgeable! Nice hub, I'm going with a second-hand Golf R as per your suggestion :)
